We are looking for a postdoc in the area of robotics and control for smart manufacturing systems, see https://sdc-mfg.engin.umich.edu/. The postdoc will work with Professors Dawn Tilbury and Kira Barton in Mechanical Engineering and the Robotics Institute at the University of Michigan. The research will bring together large data sets collected in real time from the factory floor and created by real-time simulations, into a digital twin framework for monitoring, analysis, and predictive decision making. New control algorithms will be developed to improve the overall performance of the manufacturing system along the dimensions of productivity, quality, adaptability, and sustainability.
The postdoc will work with a smart, agile industrial testbed at the University of Michigan that includes industrial collaborative robots, CNC machines, and 3D printers, instrumented with industrial-quality sensors and controllers. Multiple graduate and undergraduate students work in the group, and there is good collaboration with industrial partners. Funding comes from NSF, government labs, and industry. Required qualifications include: a recent PhD in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (or a related field); experience in control systems (theory and/or application); excellent communication skills. Desirable qualifications include: experience with industrial control systems; experience with manufacturing systems; experience with collaborative or industrial robotics; experience with Big Data or Cloud Computing; programming experience (C/C++/Java/ROS).
Interested candidates should send their CV and a cover letter describing their specific interest and how their background fits the qualifications to Prof. Dawn Tilbury tilbury@umich.edu and Prof. Kira Barton bartonkl@umich.edu preferably before August 30, although applications will be reviewed as received. Start date could be in the fall or winter.
