4-YEAR PHD PROGRAM IN MODELING AND ENGINEERING RISK AND COMPLEXITY AT THE SCUOLA SUPERIORE MERIDIONALE, NAPLES, ITALY
SPECIALIZING IN DYNAMICAL SYSTEMS AND CONTROL OF COMPLEX SYSTEMS
Are you fascinated by the mathematics of complex systems, synchronization, and emergent behavior? Do you want to develop cutting-edge control strategies for complex networks, multi-agent systems, and interconnected infrastructures? From controlling epidemic spread and climate dynamics to managing smart grids and autonomous vehicle networks, the future depends on our ability to understand and steer complex dynamical systems.
If you're passionate about nonlinear dynamics, network control theory, multi-scale modeling, and complex adaptive systems, this is the perfect program for you! The Call for Applications for the 4-year PhD Program in Modeling and Engineering Risk and Complexity at the Scuola Superiore Meridionale (a prestigious School for Advanced Studies established in Naples by the Italian Government in 2019) is now available at
https://www.ssmeridionale.it/avcp/bando-di-concorso-xli-ciclo-dottorato-di-ricerca-della-scuola-superiore-meridionale
Research Focus Areas Include:
Dynamical systems theory and bifurcation analysis
Control of complex networks and multi-agent systems
Synchronization phenomena in coupled oscillators
Nonlinear control theory and adaptive control
Stochastic dynamics and noise-induced phenomena
Network topology and controllability
Cyber-physical systems and distributed control
Machine learning for dynamical systems
We seek exceptional students with strong backgrounds in Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, or related quantitative fields who are excited about applying dynamical systems theory to real-world challenges. 5 fully funded 4-year scholarships are available this year. Each scholarship includes a stipend of EUR 19,000 per year (increased by 50% during international research stays). Students must spend at least 12 months abroad during their PhD. Each scholarship also provides approximately EUR 3,800 annually for research costs and travel.
Students select their research projects and supervisors from diverse options during their first year.
Examples of past and ongoing research projects are available at: https://www.ssmeridionale.it/modeling-and-engineering-risk-and-complexity-merc/
Application Requirements:
Submit a brief scientific report (MSc thesis description), CV, personal statement, and reference letters following the instructions at the website above by no later than August 27th, 2025. Applications must be submitted through the online platform: https://www.ssmeridionale.it/avcp/bando-di-concorso-xli-ciclo-dottorato-di-ricerca-della-scuola-superiore-meridionale/
Successful candidates will be announced by the end of September 2025, with the program officially starting November 1st, 2025.
