The Control Systems & Robotics (CSR) group (https://uom-csrgroup.uk/) within the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of the University of Manchester has a history of 60 years, going back to the founder of the group (previously the Control Systems Centre) Professor Howard H. Rosenbrock FRS. The CSR group has the credo to achieve significant fundamental results in theory and provide evidence for its significance in applications. The Control Systems & Robotics group is programme lead for two highly successful MSc degrees, the MSc in Advanced Control and Systems Engineering, and the newly introduced MSc in Robotics. The strongest graduates from these MSc programmes often go on to reading for PhD degrees with us. The MSc in Advanced Control and Systems Engineering had its 50th anniversary ceremony in 2019. This year, the group celebrated their roots by inviting world leading control theory and robotics application specialists to the first instantiation of the Rosenbrock Lecture Series on 21 March 2024, linkedin.com/company/control-systems-and-robotics-group.
In recent years, the CSR group has made significant contributions to feedback control theory in areas such as: robust control theory, e.g. negative imaginary systems theory (e.g. Lanzon), absolute stability theory (e.g. Heath, Carrasco), multi-agent / distributed systems theory (e.g. Ding, Li), adaptive control theory (e.g. Herrmann), and nonlinear control theory (e.g. all the above and others too). Theoretical control research within the CSR group has been providing strong fundamental support to high-profile advanced applications in areas such as robot control (e.g. Adorno, Carrasco, Ding, Herrmann, Lanzon, Lennox, Marinho, Stancu), power/energy systems control/estimation (e.g. Marjanovic, Zhang) and process control (e.g. Lennox). Specifically, the CSR group’s work in robotics has created a consistent research income stream to the University of Manchester.
We are seeking outstanding applicants with an established record in Applied Control and Control Systems Design. You will lead a vibrant research programme with a particular focus on Applied Control and Control Systems Design. Your research needs to be focussed on advanced control applications, while ideally being informed by a control theoretical understanding. These advanced control applications can be complementary to existing control applications in the CSR group. Your research needs to be fundable by national, e.g. UKRI, or international funders, e.g. Horizon. You will contribute to both the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes, namely the group’s own MSc in Advanced Control and Systems Engineering and relevant Undergraduate (UG) programmes of the department.
