The laboratory of research in optimization, learning, and energy (ROLE), led by Dr. Ming Jin in the Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Virginia Tech has one fully funded Ph.D. position for fall 2024.
The goal of ROLE lab is to enable trustworthy AI for safety-critical systems. Towards this goal, we develop fundamental theories in the areas of optimization, control, and machine learning, with emphasis on various aspects of trust, including security, reliability, explainability, and scalability.

Students with a strong foundation in mathematics and programming, and a background in machine learning, optimization, control, or statistics, will be given priority. Those interested in Large Language Models (LLM) or optimization of power grid control are also welcome to apply.
