Summary:
The Department of Automatic Control and Systems Engineering (ACSE) invites applications for Lecturer and Senior Lecturer positions in the area of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science for Engineering. We seek to appoint Lecturers/Senior Lecturers with the potential/ability to conduct world-leading research in a relevant area related to Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, with focus on engineering applications. These posts will support the expansion of our teaching and research capability in line with our long-term strategic goal which is to embed the department as one of the leading automatic control and systems engineering departments in the world.
We are an innovative, dynamic and high-reaching department that is renowned for encouraging multidisciplinary research activities involving partners from academia as well as the public and private sector, including Unilever, IBM, the UK National Health Service, National Grid, Rolls-Royce, Airbus, Siemens, Jaguar Land Rover, Ricardo, GKN Aerospace and more. Our fundamental research and knowledge-based activities are aligned with societal challenges of our times. We seek to develop innovative solutions to address global challenges in a diverse range of application fields from Life Sciences and Healthcare, Energy and the Environment, to Manufacturing, Aerospace and Infrastructure.
We are looking for innovative and ground-breaking researchers who are able to develop, lead and sustain independent research of international standing in artificial intelligence and data science that underpins developments in automatic control and systems engineering through high-quality research publications, in terms of originality, significance and rigour, as well as research grant income and impact generation.
You will be passionate about working to address the current and future research challenges in the field and to develop, apply and evaluate new solutions that benefit society and industry. You will contribute significantly to strengthening the fundamental research in next generation methods, systems, and processes to enable the application of artificial intelligence in real-world engineering contexts, while ensuring that human needs are translated into understandable, ethical, and trustworthy AI. Our current research activity includes the development of novel learning architectures for applications that range from digital manufacturing and energy grids to neuroscience and social systems; theoretical investigations of the bias, interpretability, and performance guarantees of machine learning algorithms and data sets; and novel control and reinforcement learning methods that enable the integration of engineered systems with complex and dynamical systems.
You will assist to maintain the department’s reputation for teaching excellence by contributing to our undergraduate and graduate programmes by designing, delivering and assessing high quality research-led teaching. In addition to cultivating a world-class research profile and maintaining teaching excellence, experience and capability in developing cross-disciplinary collaborations and a willingness to contribute to the collegiate life in the department and research centres is also essential.
You will hold a PhD (or be close to completion) and be able to demonstrate potential/ability to conduct world-leading independent research in a relevant area related to artificial intelligence and data science that underpins developments in automatic control and systems engineering.
