As part of a wider recruitment effort for two Lecturer/Senior Lecturer Posts in Robotics, Control, Communications and AI we are seeking to employ an expert

in Control Systems with Robotics potential

within the University of Manchester, UK.

The University invites applications for the above full-time posts which are available immediately. We are seeking outstanding applicants with an established research and teaching record in the areas of Control Systems (Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering) (and Verifiable Autonomy/ Communications/ Hardware/AI (Department of Computer Science)) with Robotics applications potential.

The Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering within the School of Engineering is one of the largest of its type in the UK, having 70 academic staff, around 700 undergraduates, 250 taught postgraduates, and 200 research postgraduates. The Department is sub-divided into 3 divisions, each roughly equal in size. The Control, Robotics and Communications Division is one of these three divisions, which includes the Control & Robotics group and the Communications Group. The Shanghai Ranking system ranks Automation & Control Engineering as the 6th strongest research area in the University of Manchester and Manchester is ranked 31st in this research area world-wide. One of the Department’s most impactful applied research areas is Robotics for Extreme Environments contained within the Control and Robotics Group. This research theme has been extremely successful in bringing in major research investment and activity into the Department/School/Faculty and propelling the University of Manchester to the forefront of robotics engineering research nationally. The Division is program lead on three highly successful MSc degrees, the MSc in Advanced Control and Systems Engineering, MSc Communications and Signal Processing and the newly introduced MSc in Robotics, the strongest graduates from these MSc programmes often end up reading for PhD degrees with us.
The Manchester Centre for Robotics and AI was founded in 2022 and brings together more than 50 academics with expertise in robotics, autonomous systems and AI spread across the School of Engineering. This also follows more than ten recent strategic appointments in robotics, autonomous systems and artificial intelligence. This is complemented by numerous academics in other faculties working at the interface between robotics, autonomy and AI across humanities and biological and medical sciences.

Key Responsibilities, Accountabilities or Duties (abbreviated)

You will lead a vibrant research programme in the area of either Control Systems (Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering). You will contribute to both the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes. You will provide support to the administration of the Department, the School and/or the Faculty as appropriate. Candidates must be able to teach on our MSc degree in Advanced Control Systems to be considered.
