Paper Submission Deadline: April 17, 2023
Special Session Description:
Electric vehicles (EVs) are a promising solution for reducing carbon emissions. Thanks to technological advancements and supportive policies, EV sales have increased worldwide. However, the availability and rollout of charging infrastructure are crucial for efficient charging since recharging an EV takes longer than refueling an internal combustion engine vehicle. On the one hand, to avoid potential health and safety issues of EV batteries during fast charging, control algorithms should be carefully designed with the knowledge of battery characteristics and user preferences. On the other hand, as EVs continue penetrating the vehicle market, they create opportunities and challenges for power grids. A large fleet of EVs can provide the energy storage capacity that can be utilized for peak-shaving, voltage and frequency regulation, and grid support for renewable energy integration. This special session aims to present new research and development in charging control and smart management for EV batteries to address the above mention challenges from both the EV and grid perspectives.The topics of interest include, but not restricted to:
- Developing health- and safety-aware fast charging control algorithms;
- Analyzing, modeling, and forecasting EV travel patterns, charging demands, charging behaviors, and EV users’ response to coordinated scheduling requests;
- Physics/data-driven modeling of EV batteries, supercapacitors, and fuel cells;
- Modeling, controlling, and optimizing advanced power electronics for smart charging and V2G systems;
- Evaluating battery performance and control in the context of optimal charging scheduling;
- Implementing fault detection, diagnosis, and maintenance procedures for charging facilities.
