Mechanical and Process Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, effective August 1, 2024:
Full Professorship W3 for "Vehicle and Transport Systems"
(Level W3 LBesO W)
(Successor to Professor D. Schramm)
We are looking for an internationally outstanding personality in the field of automation technology with application focus on traffic systems, vehicle technology or automation of complex
systems.
The future research areas of the professorship include areas of automation of vehicles, transportation systems, and production facilities as well as corresponding assistance systems.
Independent scientific expertise is expected in several of the following research topics:
- Methods of Machine Learning
- Methods of autonomous driving
- Systems engineering of future vehicle/transport systems or traffic systems
- Automation of complex systems
High-ranked publications at relevant peer-reviewed conferences and publications in peer-reviewed scientific and relevant journals are expected, as well as experience in the competitive
solicitation of self-designed or responsible research projects and their successful implementation.
Leadership experience in research and/or development is required.
Experience in industrial research or in corresponding joint projects for the technological implementation of research results with industry is required. Upon assumption of the professorship, it is expected that competitive third-party funded projects, preferably DFG (German Research Foundation)-funded projects, will be acquired.
In research, commitment to networked and collaborated work is expected to complement and
extend existing expertise in the Faculty of Engineering. This includes the initiation, solicitation,
and implementation of joint funded collaborative projects within and outside the faculty. In
this context, special emphasis is placed on cooperation with the other Chairs of the Institute
of Mechatronics and System Dynamics as well as the Institute of Marine Technology, Ocean
Engineering, and Transport Systems, the MOTION Institute and the research area of Technical
Logistics and Transport. Likewise, the ability for international research cooperation is required.
The professorship is involved in several large-scale facilities e.g. the Experimental and Management Center Autonomous Inland Vessels (VeLaBi), the Experimental Center for Innovative
Port and Transshipment Technologies (HaFoLa) and has, among others, various simulators for
vehicle guidance and assistance. The continuation of activities within the framework of the
professorship is expected.
Courses on "Model- and Data-driven Methods of Autonomous Systems", the "Fundamentals
of Autonomous Vehicle Systems" as well as the research foci of the professorship are to be
developed and offered in the German- and English-language Bachelor's and Master's programs of the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering. A further development of
the study program in the direction of "Autonomous Systems" is to be significantly co-responsible.
The University of Duisburg-Essen attaches particular importance to the quality of teaching.
Didactic approaches on teaching - also taking into account
the profile of the University of Duisburg-Essen - have to be presented.
The willingness to participate in the self-governing bodies of the university is required.
The hiring requirements comply with § 36 of the Higher Education Act of North Rhine-Westphalia (Hochschulgesetz NRW).
