DETAILED DESCRIPTION
During production, the quality of parts produced by casting depends greatly on the speed at which they are cooled. The mechanical integrity of the molds also depends on it. Non-uniformly cooled molds tend to crack quickly, which adds considerable operating costs.
The main goal of this PhD project is to work towards the development of active cooling solutions in which temperature profiles of components being cooled can be controlled over time and space. Using a prototype active cooling device and a numerical model representing a digital twin of the prototype, the PhD student will develop control strategies that are able to robustly obtain desired temperature profiles for thermal loads of increasing complexity.
Professors Moncef Chioua and Bruno Blais groups at Polytechnique Montreal, Canada have an immediate opening for a PhD position in advanced process control. The selected candidate will be working on the development of novel algorithms and computational tools to support the operation of process systems.
The work will be done in collaboration with industrial partners which will provide the selected candidate an opportunity to discuss with industrial practitioners and to benefit from the experience of industrial researchers in creating and deploying new technology.
Candidates should apply directly by sending their CV, transcript, and a motivation letter to Moncef.Chioua@polymtl.ca and Bruno.Blais@polymtl.ca.
