Motivation and Aims
In nature, mammals are found all over the world, these legged animals or humans can reach anywhere on earth, adapt to uneven, discontinuous and obstructed environment, while some even have a certain load capacity. Their locomotion patterns are flexible and diverse to better adapt to the living environment. Imitating these real animals or humans, legged robots have potential advantages over wheeled or tracked vehicles in regard to the traversal of rough and unstructured terrain. Such robots will travel in outdoor terrain that is too steep, rutted, rocky, wet, muddy and snowy for conventional vehicles. Recently, DARPA Robotics Challenge motivated the development of bipedal legged robots, but there are more challenges in the application of biped robots. Currently, some quadruped robots are gradually moving towards application, such as Spot, AYNmal and Jueying etc. However, there are still many challenges to solve the application problem in legged systems.
This special issue focuses on the methodologies and technologies for legged robot design, control, planning, perception and learning. These involve bionic design, mechatronic design, control algorithm, trajectory planning, information fusion, reinforcement learning and multi-robot, etc. This research will bring us to identify key technologies and promote the rapid development of the field of legged robots.
