Postdoc Position at the University of Michigan on modeling, optimization, and control co-design of energy harvesting systems
Position Description
The Real-time Adaptive Control Engineering Lab at the Department of Naval Architecture &
Marine Engineering of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor has an opening for a
postdoctoral research fellow in the area of Control Co-design, Optimization, and Control
Systems. The successful candidate will work on control co-design of renewable marine energy
systems, focusing on hydrokinetic turbines. The research will involve modeling, simulation, and
analysis with collaboration opportunities with a team of researchers with diverse backgrounds
in multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO), hydrodynamics, and CFD. The research may also
require some experiments for proof-of-concept and technology demonstration.
The duration of the position is two years and may be renewable depending on satisfactory
progress and availability of funds. The target starting date is flexible, with the desired start date
being in May 2022.
Qualifications
Applicants should have a Ph.D. in a closely related engineering field (e.g., mechanical, electrical,
aerospace, ocean, or marine engineering). Ideal candidates should have a strong background in
the general areas of control and dynamic systems, optimization, and control co-design. The
candidate must have strong coding experience in MATLAB and Python and excellent
organizational, oral, and written communication skills. Candidates with a strong analytical
background and experience in renewable energy system design, multi-physics/large-scale
optimization, and real-time, adaptive, and model predictive control are preferred.
Applications
Email the application package in one single pdf file to Prof. Jing Sun (jingsun@umich.edu) and
Dr. Reza Amini (mamini@umich.edu), including (i) 1-page cover letter describing interest in the
position and personal career goals, (ii) CV (must include a link to candidate’s Google Scholar
page), (iii) Research statement describing research background and interests, and (iv) list of at
least three references with contact information, including email addresses and phone numbers.
