Recruiting of US Students for an NSF-supported Advanced Studies Institute in France.
Overview
Wayne State University is awarded by the International Research Experience for Students (IRES) program of National Science Foundation to implement an Advanced Studies Institute (ASI) in France in 2022 and 2023 with the theme of industrial risk management for active diagnosis, accurate characterization, and reliable mitigation of industrial risks. The ASI is hosted by Wayne State University in collaboration with the National Institute of Applied Science – Loire Valley Center (INSA CVL) at Bourges and the National Institute for Research in Computer Science and Automation - Lille-Nord Europe (INRIA Lille). Industrial risk management is an extremely important aspect of industrial operation. It deals with various industrial risks including quality degradation, contingency, human errors, as well as faults and/or failures of industrial systems that may bear immediate, severe, and potentially catastrophic consequences on property, personnel, communities, and the environment.
The goal of the ASI is to bolster U.S. for development of globally engaged workforce with skills in industrial risk management, in fundamental knowledge, methodologies, applications, industrial experience, and environmental and societal perspectives.
The ASI will provide an intensive two-week training in industrial risk management. We will teach advanced topics on theory and practices of diagnosis, characterization, and mitigation for resilient industrial risk management with unique applications to robotic and autonomous systems, battery networks, and smart grids. Through various activities such as short courses, seminars, student presentations, case studies, etc., students will be immersed in a diverse and vibrant learning and research environment supervised and taught by French and US experts. During the two-week ASI activities in France, we will also arrange cultural tour for two days in France.
The 2022 ASI will be held in INSA CVL at Bourges campus and INRIA Lille in France from August 1 to August 13, 2022. Fourteen US students will be recruited in the ASI in France. The grant will cover air and ground transportation, lodging, meals, and a stipend for each participant. Travel insurance and Covid-related costs will also be compensated.
